Dissidents of Utopia
A downloadable book
After centuries of tumult and chaos peace and freedom has finally come to the peoples of Earth, and the peoples of Mars. As a celebration, the two worlds have come together to launch the Starship Gagarin. Gagarin is mankind's greatest scientific accomplishment. It can safety house and feed four hundred human beings on their mission to meet and befriend the intelligence of the galaxy.
The chairman of the ship is Thomas Kafando, that man who is attributed to be the great hero of the last battle of the revolution. The truth is a little more complex than this. Lucy Drummond is a refugee from the last capitalist enclave: the Citadel, a climate bunker in Antarctica. She wants to live up to the hero she believes Kafando to be. And also along for the mission are representatives from all of the cultures of Earth and Mars.
When Gagarin comes across a nearly empty alien cryo-stasis ship the crew is inexorably drawn into the conflict between the two societies on the world Santosia. The indigenous Santosians lived comfortable lives until the Tuariskeagn arrived. The Tuariskeagn were space refugees on the run from their old cybernetic servants and Santosia matched the mythic homeworld from their mythology. They said they would use their advanced technology to uplift the native Santosians into a civilized society. Now, most of them live in segregated mega cities and labor to enrich the Tuariskeagn.
Gagarin's attempt to repatriate survivors from the cryo ship draws the attention of Santosian radicals. Will Gagarin's crew allow themselves to be drawn into this centuries old conflict? Will they extricate themselves or will they cause an interstellar incident?
